TPMS question

Hey guys. Question. I had two speed sensors go out on a 2011 M3 E93. My dash looked like a Christmas tree. I live in the Florida Keys so there is only one guy that fixes them within 60 miles. So suffice to say, I knew I was going to get screwed. I did, to the tune of 1163 to replace the two sensors. Well, when this happened, I also got a TPMS error where it won't reset. The mechanic told me this happens when the ABS turns itself off because of the speed sensors. He said the TPMS module is working because there is a fault code that ALL TPMS sensors are out. He said try driving it and reset it a couple of times and that sometimes works but if not all 4 sensors would have to be replaced. Is that normal for all 4 sensors to go out at the same time ?

I cant answer your question about all 4 sensors going out at once, but I can tell you that last year on a road trip home to Key Largo, both my front speed sensors went bad. I bought a scanner to find the issue, bought two $50 sensors, and installed them in my driveway. I think the scanner was about $300. This week on a road trip home to Key Largo, I had another ABS issue. I am assuming it is probably the rear speed sensors, but I have yet to run a scan to diagnose the issue.

Its hard to believe that someone charged you $1163 to replace the two sensors. Its probably a half hour to run a scan/diagnose, and a half hour each to replace the sensor. And then another half hour to clear the codes and re-run the scan.

Please share who you used so I can avoid that guy.

Batteries in tpms don’t last more than 7 years in my experience. It’s possible for them to go out around the same time.

Yes avoid at all cost. 200 for diagnosis which does not apply to the fix. 1.25 hours per sensor. The only reasonable cost was the oil change which was $ 300.

Yea that's what he said but man everything at once, speed sensors and that.. Just weird.

There is a german car mechanic in Key Largo, European Motorwerk Autohaus.

I touched base with him last year about an oil change. I really just wanted to meet him and feel him out for future service. He told me I would need to leave the car overnight. Seriously? overnight for an oil change? I ordered some oil and a filter and did it myself.

He has good reviews so perhaps its an option if I really don't want to do something myself. I really don't trust anyone to work on my car, but one day I will need someone I can trust.

No it isn't normal for all 4 sensors to go out at the same time. The TPMS signal receiver (transponder) may have failed. The receiver is located behind the passenger's side rear fender liner. New TPMS sensors are about ~$50 and the transponder about ~$300.

So I would recommend replacing all (4) TPMS sensors. So in your case you need two more. If you can’t reset the system still……Replace the module itself. As I recall it’s behind the rear passenger tire. Remove the silver air panel at the passenger corner and look up. It looks like an early 2000’s usb Wi-Fi device (pic attached). Also most capable tire shops have TPMS equipment. They can at least see if a wheel TPMS is broadcasting at all. The batteries die or road hazzards claim them.

At the same time, the 4 sensors are not working, it should be the TPMS signal receiver, the TPMS code of the 2011 BMW m3: HUF RDE012. The charge level of each TPMS can be checked using MaxiTPMS.
Four HUF-TPMS were replaced four years ago. 3 months ago, the screen said there was a problem with the TPMS. Checked the tire pressure, no problem. Check the TPMS of each tire with MaxiTPMS. Passenger side rear tire TPMS not working (no power). Know its code: HUF RDE012, for sale on Ebay Got a used replacement, replaced it, drove it and reset it.

Should always bites me in the ass. I give the TPMS in the wheels 4-6 years of battery life. When they start to bug out I’d rather do them all. Doing the following 3 as they come is budget but annoying. I’ve only had to replace mine one time and I’m due within the next 1-3 years. Once one fucks around….they’re all go for another 4-6 years. I don’t have any scanning tools for these. Hence I’d rather just replace my four wheel sensors for a better idea of when I have to do this again. My local Americas Tire was able to see that 2 of 4 were fine when I had issues. They had a hand held device that can see the band they broadcast in as well as if they were broadcasting or dead. I betcha if you had most tires stores troubleshoot this while you were already getting tires some cheaper resolutions would happen (wink, wink).
