Replacement Steering Rack

All, I am new to this forum but not new to cars.

I recently picked up a E92 M3 2009 after it was in an accident. Pretty much all damage was suspension, which caused the subframe to also get a crack.

I replaced the subframe and the steering rack and its back on the road. I am getting a steering angle and a DSC code which seem to be related. When driving straight my steering wheel is basically upside down. I definitely need an alignment and I will get one...

From what I can remember the way the steering shafts connect to the joints, are all pretty much one way. and I am fairly certain I have equal tuns left and right from the wheels being straight.

I am looking for guidance on what I may have done incorrectly as I don't think the wheel should be upside down but rather a little left or a little right before alignment (since the joints only go in one way).

Appreciate any responses. I am starting to think I was somehow not centered when I installed it but I just don't know how unless those slip joints for the column are not one way only.


Edit: My original rack or the replacement didnt have the black alignment cap that i'm seeing in some other posts. I guess i need to center my steering wheel and re-align the splines on my rack? Then do a steering angle re-learn?

The steering column can be off from the steering rack center this will cause the steering angle sensor on the steering column to send an error. For sure something is install incorrectly.

Thanks for the reply. I def think because my car was missing the plastic alignment piece I likely incorrectly put back into place thinking my steering wheel and wheels were all in the right spots.

It sounds like the fix is to to remove the steering connection to the rack, ensure everything is lined up with the steering wheel and the wheels, then connect it back and see if a steering angle relearn procedure takes care of it.
