How does this part even go bad? Any guesses? Does it clog up?

Rat3d ///M wrotehappened to me today again this time I was below a quarter of a tank. Im definitely thinking that valve is my issue, really annoying though.I've never heard of it happening at a half tank, but it's worth a try. It's a cheap part and an easy 3 hour job, so may as well give it a shot.
Anybody else get a CEL associated with this issue? I'm not seeing any of the symptoms mentioned in the OP but got code 2772 - Activate tank vent valve.
I would like to say thank you for the write up. This actually fixed my problem. I actually had two problems. One was the ICV, which I had a code for it. and the other one was the idle fluctuation and stalling, which I thought it was due to the damaged ICV, but it wasn't. It ended up being the fuel tank breather valve. Once I changed this, it worked and the engine idle as smooth as when new. So if you have this problem with no code, please go ahead can change the fuel tank breather valve.
Any chance anyone has the pictures for this thread? I don't see any of them popping up any longer.

Sorry about the pics guys. Since Photobucket turned off third party hosting for non paying members, the pics are no longer working. I will at some point find another host and repost the pics.
I know this is bad timing and I will try to get to it asap.

I'm doing my spark plugs this weekend so will def do this too. For me though the needle bouncing around only happens if the car is on WHILE im getting gas. Sometimes it just bounces around and others it will stall. I've never had it happen after I left. Wondering if this is the same culprit.

I don't know if this is true or not but its happened to me once and I tested the fuel. Came out that it had 18% ethanol in there. Never happened again at a different station.

qbnlykwhoa wroteIf you're serious, then yes. It's a safety hazard to refuel while your engine is running. It's also illegal in many states. I see you're from New Jersey, so I'm guessing you don't pump your own gas often? Are we supposed to turn it off while refueling? Does everyone on here turn the engine on their M's off?
qbnlykwhoa wroteAs is smoking while pumping lol. Any chance you could re-upload the photos?
Thanks!
Thanks!
M3MPH1S wroteNo, I usually pump it myself just never considered the engine running a safety hazard. Especially in the colder months. My question was more of an inquiry to others that do leave the engine running sometimes, I can't be the only, do you encounter the same behavior. If you're serious, then yes. This is very useful! but the pictures aren't loading for me...do you have this writeup in a pdf format you could e-mail?
