After a long year off from the E92, it's finally ready. Well, mostly. I've spent most of the year tracking my other cars.

There's a few issues with the car I have to resolve but other than that...

Last Monday (the 23rd of January), I took the car to Thunderhill East for a private day to shake out any issues with the car before the main event, which was a two day weekend at Buttonwillow.

To my surprise, I needed to break in the new 4.6L Carbahn motor. They wanted something like 1300 street miles but that was going to be impossible given that the car was only going to be track driven.

No matter, I spent the entire day basically doing nothing but parade laps - they were pretty quick parade laps though. I was limited below 5500 rpm, which in 7th gear is something like 125 mph with my final drive. Hilarious. Despite this, I was doing 2 min flat laps. The acceleration using half-throttle was unreal as well.

We didn't have much time to get all the weight out of the car that I wanted, nor did we get the dry sump installed (still factory system). That's going to be a tricky thing - because to install it I need to put the oil reservoir somewhere other than the engine bay, there's just no room. I kind of don't want it to blow up all over the passenger either so that leaves probably behind the car.

Here's some photos of the finished product - the AFFF system is installed in the rear, along with the Chillout system (This thing is amazing - constant 35-50 deg water supplied to 2 chillsuits):

What's the scoop on the carbahn motor? Who tuned it with the dct? Any power #s?
Right now, as things stand, the car weighs in at 3250 lbs with no driver and about 1/4 tank of fuel. Still a big boy, and not where I want to be. I have the Bimmerworld carbon dash, but we weren't able to replace it in time for this week, so what I have is the stock dash with the dials and iDrive - my goal is to eliminate these entirely.

As I was saying, I did a shakedown day at Thunderhill. There were a couple minor issues - for example, CAN wasn't wired correctly to my AIM Solo DL2 and if you don't set it up so that it records data on GPS only it won't record any data if it doesn't see data come across the CAN bus. I had Garmin Catalyst data only.

At the very end of the day after doing 130 track miles I decided to put on the brand new Pirelli DHBs I had bought all the way back last year when I had the foolish hope of being able to do Bimmer Challenge in 2022. One year later I was finally able to drive the car!

I unleashed the car and put down a 1:52.6; Thunderhill East is not a track I've done thousands of laps in, so it's one of my worst in terms of bravery. Turn 8 requires a lot of guts and trust in your aero, so I had spent the entire day trying to pick up more maximum speed.

This lap time is 4 seconds faster than I was able to accomplish in my 992 GT3 on a brand new set of Cup2 tires (100 deg heat though heh).

I only did 3 hot laps or so before parking the car on the trailer. I took bypass so hard, the compression on the car basically tore up my bumper. The Strom uprights require me to put a 12mm spacer in front to clear the strut towers with 18x10.5 ET22 wheels. With 295/30-18 RE-71RS or 305 Pirelli DHBs you'll see they peek out a little bit. I don't really have a better solution atm other than deal with it.

I dropped off the car Monday night at the shop to fix the issues and come up with something to deal with the bumper situation. I was also hopeful we could get the Recaro seats in, we had discovered too late that the BK mounts wouldn't fit the seats even though they had measured out correctly; I guess the seat tapers in such a way that it doesn't work.

Unfortunately, the mounts that arrived aren't really going to work. The seats are too low, and I wouldn't be able to see over the dash. I'm going to have to have a custom set fabricated by TC.

They sure are beautiful. While they are pretty to look at, the reason I got them is more to do with the fact that they actually fit my body very well. They lock me in more than the Sparco Ergo seat does - even with the lap belts tightened as far as I can comfortably manage, I will be tossed in corners; it's very exhausting as well as distracting, especially given the grip levels the car is able to manage now. At the end of the day, my back is just killing me as well.

After fixing a lot of convenience issues (Add back USB power for my garmin, fix AIM wiring, fix belt lengths, bumper shaving), I took the car back out on Saturday for Bimmer Challenge.

It'd been a while, and of course the first session at Speed Ventures is almost always a shitshow with people going off left and right (Mustang went off on the outlap), then we had emergency vehicles towing a stuck s2000. After passing slower traffic, because no one is gridded correctly, I was able to set a decent hot lap of 1:51.78 with the Pirellis on like, lap 8.

The 2nd session, I did myself a favor and forgot to latch up my hood all the way, so was black flagged mechanical. When I went back out I wasn't able to complete the session, because I lost 5th and 7th gear - the transmission went into limp mode. I came back in and tried to read codes, but I didn't have my INPA laptop with me - so nothing transmission specific. After restarting the car and driving down the short straight leaving Buttonwillow, I tried again. But things had heated up and I ended up not improving on my previous laptimes. Also, I felt like I needed to set up the suspension better - I felt like the car wouldn't turn in without understeer. dogbone's user avatardogbone gave me some great advice and I resolved to tune the suspension better.

Alas, it was towards the end of day 1. I decided to preserve my tires and run on the 295-30/18 Bridgestone RE-71RS. I was also pretty much done with the brake pads and changed out the pads. Ran the car for a few laps during the bonus session just to feel out the car and the balance felt way better. The car wanted to turn in. This is actually the first time I've touched the MCS 3-ways since I got them - I've literally been running at default settings the entire time since I upgraded to them.
The final day, at the very first session I was going to post a fantastic time on the RE-71RS but the car skipped 6th on the main straight, and went into 7th. That was unfortunate, and also not a great start given the transmission issues I had the previous day.

Car felt great though considering the balance, and I was posting 1:53s. 2nd session I did better and did a 1:52.5

There's definitely more in the car, given that I know I can put more speed through bus stop and Riverside.

Unfortunately, the transmission issues did not subside, and the car went into limp mode during the last session due to "transmission overheating". You get a nasty red gear warning message and a notification to put the car in P and leave the engine running. Not very easy to do when you're halfway around the track.

I called it a day and soon it became a torrential downpour at Buttonwillow. All while I was trying to detach the splitter endfences so I could load the car up onto the trailer.

For transmission cooling, I have the fall line pan (not the Slon) and the do88 cooler. Before the stroker motor, I did not have any issues with the transmission with just the do88 cooler. I don't actually think you need anything else with the stock motor, even with the final drive. I'm told that many transmission pans aren't baffled as well as the Slon so this could be a factor.

This is my 2nd transmission, the first one blew up after 80+ track days and 180k miles. I have the Epic DCT tune, since it's the only one that plays nicely with the 3.62 final drive.

We'll see what's up with the transmission. I might just have to buy a bunch of these as working spares, and swap out the clutches with SSP/Dodson clutches - we'll see. Might have to retune the DCT since the input torque is greater than stock.

The car is hilarious though, when you shift at 8400 rpm you only go down to ~7200 rpm. It sounds like a CVT driven in anger.

Carbahn tuned it. DCT was Epic tuning (only one that I know that works with the final drive). I don't have any power #s other than quoted by marketing, which puts the car at nearly 600 hp at the crank on 100 Octane. Car is tuned for 100 Octane and that's the only gas I run atm.

I'll have this thing properly dyno'd after we're in a more finished state. I really want to get the car to 3k lbs. It seems like I'm going to have to go with some more heroic measures.

Car doesn't have AC/heat. We're going to remove the headlights and replace with blanks. The dash is going to go, and I'll get an AIM replacement. Car doesn't have thinned wiring and that's in the cards as well.

Did I mention that I'm going to have Zebulon craft a flat bottom and diffuser for me as well?
One other thing - I'm curious if I have a more conservative tune because of the lack of dry sump. Once that is finally installed, I wonder if that'll make a difference. Just another question to ask.
Loving these updates, thank you! And good luck getting the final details sorted!

Fwiw there is another person that does the different final drive DCT tunes if you need that for some reason, OG Shark's user avatarOG Shark can point you to them.

I've started to fiddle with 305/645-18 DH's and the Strom uprights as well but didn't get mine in there (yet). They almost worked with 10.5x18 et24 and 10mm spacers but I think I need to grind quite a bit more of the behind the fender sheet metal to make that happen. I could and should also remove my front helper springs but didn't want to rush anything. Went with 285/645-18 fronts for this weekend but may try again. Documented with photos in the below thread.

I’ll be there when the car is ready lmao
stroker gang.

i always joke that your E92 is the final stage of mine lol.

personally i stopped using the GTS/CRT flash due to issues with shifting on the 3.45 the EURO flash is still pretty good.
Is the exhaust putting more heat in the trans? More power = more heat.

what is the need/benefit for a dry sump if it isn't absolutely needed for that engine?

i've read that turner motorsport uses dry sumps because they can then use a front bladed swaybar when the oil pan is removed.

i guess its better for a car that sees a lot of high G's... is packaging better? does it have better cooling potential?

There's quite a few, mostly remove the risk of oil starvation, reservoir can be installed rearward on a Front Engine car for weight balance, more oil volume, less drag/oil aeration on rotating parts/oil pump, not sure exactly what allows the extra power to be extracted unless it's just reduced drag on components.
Thought the S65 oil system was rated to 1.3~1.4G. The GT4 ran nothing spectacularly different but ofc had much milder aero. GT3s on DHB/E/F are around ~2 latG sustained. Probably somewhere in between to justify it.

Thought y'all might enjoy this, Steve Dinan discussing dry sumps (starts about 19 minutes in), granted this may be a different setup he is talking about:

Another benefit of dry sump is that it allows the engine to be mounted lower to lower the Cg.
